Thanks to the over 80 Sumner County Democrats who made our annual Yellow Dog Days of Summer Picnic a great success!  Despite temperatures in the upper 90's, the picnic record crowd had a great time!  Music was provided by The Keg Belly Band, who entertained us with bluegrass and classic rock 'n roll.  Food was expertly prepared by the Sumner County Democratic Women and grilled to perfection by grillmasters Franky Mize and John Smith. We also had plenty of politics to go around, including a visit from <strong title="http://www.votepadgett.com/">US Senate Candidate Mike Padgett who talked to us about how to beat Lamar Alexander in November. <strong title="http://www.jimhawkins.org/">State Senate Candidate Jim Hawkins and State Representative Candidate Andy Allman also spoke. We gave away MANY yard signs. If you'd like a sign for our local candidates, please contact us and we'll get it to you. (No, we don't have Obama signs yet.) I'd like to extend a personal thank you to the volunteers who made this event happen.

Thanks and Congratulations to the SCDP Relay for Life Team!  They exceeded the goal by raising over $1995 to fight cancer.  Thanks to everyone that worked the tent, stopped by, and donated.  Special thanks to Jim Hawkins and family for supplying the yummy banana pudding!

In Westmoreland, we also beat our goal. The Westmoreland group was headed by Westmoreland Vice Chair Jennifer Fox as well as several members of the Sumner County Democratic Women. It is not too late to donate to the SCDW Westmoreland RFL team. Contact Jennifer.Fox@sumnerdems.org for more details.

Sumner Democrats continue to hold Sen. Diane Black (R-Gallatin) accountable for education funding.  Sen Black, who has supported cigarette tax increases in the past, is refusing to support Governor Bredesen's proposal to use a modest increase in the cigarette tax to fund education.  Sumner County would receive over $3.2 million for schools from this proposal -funds that would reduce the need for a local property tax increase.  Volunteer State Community College, still recovering from last April's tornado, would also benefit from the plan.  Chair Andy Allman and Vice Chair Len Assante each have spoken to and written columns for local media in support of the Governor's plan. Assante's latest column appeared in the Sumner am insert of the Sunday Tennesseean. Independent polls indicate broad support for the proposal among Tennesseans (70%) and even among Tennesseans who smoke (60%).SCDP urges all Sumner Democrats to contact their elected officials and encourage them to support the Governor's education inititative.Visit http://www.tnschoolsfirst.com/ for the facts about the Governor's proposal.
