On Tuesday Aug 17th, the Sumner County Democratic Party released the following statement via website http://sumnerdems.org/news/in-memoriam-sheriff-bob-barker:
The Sumner County Democratic Party joins the rest of Sumner County in mourning the loss of a community leader and friend, Sheriff Bob Barker. Our prayers and condolences lie with Connie and all of Sheriff Barker’s family, friends, and co-workers during this difficult time of loss. Sheriff Barker was a true public servant and leader. He protected and served all the citizens of Sumner County without regard for our differences, displaying respect and compassion for all those whose lives he touched. His skillful management of all the diverse tasks of his office marked him as a man of integrity and intelligence. He will be missed by our entire community.
After receiving continued reports of speculation during the initial hours after Sheriffs Barker’s death regarding the process of electing Sheriff Barker’s successor, the Sumner County Democratic Party adds this statement, reflecting our values and concerns for our community.
Out of an abundance of respect for Sheriff Barker’s memory and the feelings of his family, friends, and co-workers, the Sumner County Democratic Party declines to comment on the upcoming special election for Sheriff during this time of mourning. Acting Sheriff Sonny Weatherford continues the honor and tradition of Sheriff Barker’s fine legacy and Sumner Countians should feel safe and well protected. To discuss further or address questions as to the political ramifications of this sad loss only tarnishes the Sheriff’s memory and fine record as a leader and public servant. Our attention as a community should be focused on comforting the bereaved and reflecting on the exemplary record of leadership and compassion left behind by Sheriff Bob Barker, and as a responsible member of our community, the SCDP will do just that. There will be adequate time to appropriately address the steps to be taken to elect a successor. Now is not that time. Our prayers and condolences continue to pour forth for Connie, their children and family, friends, and co-workers. We can only hope that we will be joined by others in setting aside politics for this period, however short it must be.
