On September 1, 2022, the Sumner County Commission voted 20-1 to throw away democracy.
The County Commission District 13 election ended in a tie. The current Commission had the opportunity to order a runoff election so the people of that district could choose who represents them. Instead, they appointed their chosen representative.
A foundation of our government is the democratic election of representatives who serve us through elected office. That was taken away from the citizens in District 13.
Nashville’s Fox 17 ran a great story on Friday night about the events that unfolded in the Commission’s Chambers that night. Click here to watch.
Only one more vote for Democratic candidate Brenda Dotson would have given her the win. Clearly, this proves that every vote counts and that Democrats can win in Sumner County.
This event and others serve to energize us in moving the needle of tolerance, inclusion, equality, compassion, and democracy forward in Sumner County.
The next election is November 8, 2022, where Dr. Jason Martin is running for Governor, Randal Cooper is running for US Congress, and Kesa Fowler is running for TN House District 44.
